Canadian Election: Stephen Harper Eats Crow for Bird Stunt

Steve has committed his first major gaff (of what I hope to be many) in the runup to the Canadian Election.  The republicans Conservatives launched a major new juvenile web site (I’m not going to link to it) that has a bird flying over Stephane Dion and then the bird then shits on a picture of Mr. Dion’s head.

What are these guys?  A bunch of three-year olds?  These are the people we’re going to hand over the reigns to our country to?  Welcome to the Conservative Parody of Canada.

I can just picture all of the comebacks and fodder for the Rick Mercer’s of the world:

"Who’s the shit-head now?" one pundit might ask.

"Don’t criticize me or I’ll have an animated bird shit on your head too!!"

Honestly.  What a bunch of terds.

Stephen Harper later apologized for what can only be called a gaff, but thankfully, the damage has been done.  His reputation is now about as solid as, well … well-processed bird poop.

Harper’s Fuel Tax Reduction: (For an economist) He Just Doesn’t Get It

Stephen Harper’s an economist, right?  He even did an MA on the topic of ‘spend and win’ at U of Calgary.

So, how is it that his new ‘diesel fuel’ reduction is going to save the economy when no one is shipping anything?

And why is it that, when you’re supposed to understand supply and demand, you don’t realize that reducing the price for something will increase the demand, thereby increasing our reliance on it, thereby increasing our already insecure relationship with OIL?

And since we’ve sold the Tar Sands to the US, where the hell are we going to get more oil from?

Christ, even his Republican cousins in the US are increasing their calls to reduce energy dependency, especially when ‘unfriendly countries’ (ie. those that we’ve bombed the snot out of) don’t give it to us at cost.

Let’s face it:  Steve does what Steve does for the oil industry and oil industry only.

This reduction will cost Canadian taxpayers $600 million per year.  Imagine what a $600 million investment in renewable energies would do for this new and fledgling industry.  Man!  It might actually take some of our business away from the Libyans and Nigerians (which our hear are the major suppliers of oil to Ontario, not Alberta)!!

My two cents is that this two cent reduction is just another kick in the junk for people who want to move things forward and reduce our heroin-like addiction to gas, even if it is diesel.

Get with the times Steve:  oil is NOT the future of Canada.

Naomi Klein Support Department of Culture

Naomi Klein, one of Canada’s best-selling non-fiction authors, has thrown her weight behind the Department of Culture, a group that is committed to disrupting Stephen Harper’s effort to gain a majority.

Here’s the text from her newsletter:

Naomi Joins Campaign to Beat the Tories

The United States isn’t the only country in the grips of a heated election campaign. Last weekend Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper dissolved Parliament and called for a snap federal election to be held on October 14. Many groups in Canada are frantically organizing to prevent another victory for the Conservatives, aware that the stakes in this election are extremely high. Although the Tories will run on a moderate platform, there is every indication that, if elected, they will use the economic crisis to push through radical cuts to Canadian social and cultural programs — a classic Shock Doctrine tactic.

The process has in fact already begun, with $60 million slashed from cultural programs since 2006. Naomi is lending her support to a new initiative called the Department of Culture : a loose coalition of Canadian artists who are using their creative skills to unseat vulnerable Tories in the upcoming elections. If you are Canadian, check out Naomi’s speech at the launch event for the Department of Culture and find out how to get involved .

Get involved folks.  Let’s make sure Steve doesn’t win this.

Canadian Election: Creative Ideas

OK … so we’re in full swing now with the Canadian Election.

I’m an ‘ideas’ guy, so here’s what I’ve got right now:

  1. YouTube videos:  "Stephen Harper:  Bush’s 3rd Term"
  2. YouTube videos:  "My Canada … not my Canada"
  3. YouTube videos:  "Stephen Harper:  Stronger than a School-yard Bully"
  4. YouTube videos:  "Family Guy Rip-Off" (although that might dangerously put him in with the people he wants voting for him)

What are your ideas?  How can we get them live and make them popular?

Please post your thoughts in the comments as to how we can mobilize people who don’t want Stephen Harper running (ruining) the show.

Greens to be excluded from the debates

It frustrates me that one or two TV station managers decide who gets to participate in our democratic process.  Doesn’t the CBC have a little more influence than that?  Why have we left everything to CTV and other stations to decide our fate?  Is mainstream media really that worried about the Greens?

Anyways, Elizabeth May, leader of the Green Party, will not be allowed to speak at the debate between the leaders of the major federal parties.  Gilles Duceppe, traitor to Canada that he is, is entitled to speak, but someone that leads a party that has seats in all of the federal ridings (at least they did in the last election), cannot discuss their position in a public forum.

I also heard that 3 of the leaders (Harper, Layton, Duceppe) promised to pull out of the debates if she were to attend, with Harper claiming the Greens and Liberals had too much in common.  Ugh.  I feel like my sense of democracy just got a clean square kick in the junk by all of the leaders, as they have demonstrated their disdain for the democratic process.

To top it all off, I have to be honest that I’m very disappointed that Jack Layton didn’t seize on the opportunity to describe his opposition the way they are:  as not being progressive , leaving the NDP as the only moderate and progressive vote.  This would have been a perfect opportunity to reveal that the Greens are also a one-issue party.

Also, my understanding is that the Greens in Canada are about as ‘left’ as Milton Friedman.  They believe in the market’s ability to solve environmental issues.  This may have changed a little since May took charge, but when I showed interest in this party about 6 years ago, ‘the market’ was all they could talk about.

Anyways, it’ll be up to all of use to decide on who’s going to run the country for the next few years.  If we choose correctly, maybe we’ll even get a chance to remedy the wrongs that are already being committed.

Canadian Election: Solution to Vote Splitting?

Earlier (link here ), I expressed some concern about the state of Canadian voting and how ‘the left’ (which is an inappropriate title for those who, collectively, oppose the Conservatives and represent nearly 70% of the population) will consistently ‘split’ the vote, thereby improving the odds for Stephen Harper to gain a majority.

This site devoted to Electoral Reform discusses vote-splitting and what can be done, but I think I need a translator.

If it’s possible to greatly reduce the odds of the Republicans Conservatives from winning, I want to know how and I want to spread that message.

Please post your comments to discuss this strategy.
