The vague and distant tremors felt in Beijing might have been mistaken for a train rushing through town. Or joyous celebrations in a stadium packed to the brim with people watching a football game. Or maybe even a low angry growl of a feril dog that had not been fed, warning passersby to stay away.

These were the trepid and barely noticeable rumblings that would bring forth what would soon be known as the “Great ’08, the Quake that Altered the World”.

The 20th century has seen more significant natural disasters than any other century. Some even say combined. It’s because of this escalation in nature’s wrath against mankind that many religious leaders and sects claim that we are approaching what they call the “End Days”. To these people, these are the times when God, Shiva, Allah or even Fenrir come to molest and devour everything that we know because we’ve molested and devoured everything that they’ve given us. The term for this belief is ‘eschatology’ and it’s a prevalent and doom-ridden ideology that has accelerated the end of our world out of a sense of carelessness and negligence. Continue reading

Sasha Pigeon would have taken great pleasure in knowing that his wake was the same day as the start of the Olympics in China. Unfortunately, this day would also live in the memories of billions around the globe as a day of horror, a day of shock and the day on which the world changed forever.

August 8, 2008 would live in the genetic history of humankind forever, like the Kennedy assassination or the intentional destruction of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Centre.

Sasha Pigeon had always loved the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. The euphoric sense of celebration. The repetition of the ‘peace and love’ message that permeated the conflicting sense of competition. The elaborate over-the-top staging and drama that was designed to outdo the previous activity. The open ceremonies seemed to him like a few hours of watching a live version of ‘Fantasia’. Continue reading

Eddie flew from the OMNINet building as quickly as he could, knowing that it was just a matter of time before someone realized what he had done. He thought for a moment about the welfare of Forest Samson, but the thought lasted about as long as an urbanite waits when a light turns green. Despite his rush, he didn’t want to look too far out of sorts, because it was still early afternoon. Most people don’t rush out of the OMNINet buildings until late in the day. Very late.

He turned towards the hotel where Kite was staying and where he had told him to go to when he was finished his ‘mission’.

Strangely, he would have never known this before now, but the last 20 minutes were probably the most insane and invigorating minutes of his life, as sad as that might sound. He now understood one of the reasons why Kite did what he did. Continue reading

What started as a simple vendetta against one of the world’s largest corporations had materialized into a great, vast disaster for Diana. She had no idea that people like Garamond were capable of this kind of hatred and viciousness, but the evidence was clearly and carefully laid out before her.

She spent most of her life trying to find weaknesses in the OMNINet and for once in her life, she felt like she had the upper hand.

Kite had done his job well. Continue reading

Eddie Manchester wasn’t a resourceful person, but he was a senior-level employee with one of the world’s largest corporations, so he could at least use his position to dig a little deeper.

Being more emotional than thoughtful, he left Kite sitting in the coffee shop, and returned to his office, his mind trying to process what he had been told. Murder? The OMNINet? It was run by people who claimed that they were ‘good Christians’. They wouldn’t harm anyone, would they?

As soon as he got back to work, he checked his calendar and cancelled any meetings he had. Given his level at the company, his main excuse was that he was double-booked and he blamed his executive assistant with every apologetic call. The occasional derogatory comment came up and for a brief moment, he enjoyed poking fun at a girl that actually worked very hard for him. Continue reading

Kite had always imagined that the voice of the end of the world would be the rough and torn sound of Shane McGowan of the Pogues, singing about recklessness and distracting us from the true perils that surrounded us.

Instead, it was Griffith Garamond. His voice was smooth. Calm. Harmonious and void of tension. When he spoke, he made people around him feel like they were small and needy. When he paused, people waited for more, wanting more from this great figure. Continue reading

“What you are looking at, gentlemen,” Garamond stated, “is information on a particular form of technology that Nikola Tesla developed shortly before he died in the Waldorf-Astoria hotel in 1943, just down the block from where we are now.”

“One of the last major projects that he was working on involved a theoretical technology known as ‘Scalar Movements’. The public has never seen these documents or what we’ve done with them because they were all confiscated by the FBI shortly after he died. They used ‘national security’ as an excuse and for once, they were right. If this technology fell into the wrong hands, it would have been disastrous for this great country of ours.” Continue reading

When you enter an office building on a Saturday afternoon, the first thing you think is that you must have missed the alarm bell. Acres of cubicles are deserted, stripped of their organic inhabitants, now a quiet and still refuge for sleeping computers (few of which are turned off on Friday afternoon), pictures of families and friend and smelly work shoes, tucked under the retractable keyboard.

It was the pictures that always struck Kite. These were icons of hope, images of desire and sometimes visual tombstones and reminders for all office employees that for a few brief moments each week, these people weren’t stuck in a cubicle breathing in the dust of hundreds of other clock-punchers and drones. Or that they weren’t breathing in the chemically unstable and highly toxic fumes of the poorly made chairs, desks and rugs, all mass produced with cost-efficiencies in mind, and not the health of the end users. Continue reading
