Sasha Pigeon would have taken great pleasure in knowing that his wake was the same day as the start of the Olympics in China. Unfortunately, this day would also live in the memories of billions around the globe as a day of horror, a day of shock and the day on which the world changed forever.

August 8, 2008 would live in the genetic history of humankind forever, like the Kennedy assassination or the intentional destruction of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Centre.

Sasha Pigeon had always loved the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. The euphoric sense of celebration. The repetition of the ‘peace and love’ message that permeated the conflicting sense of competition. The elaborate over-the-top staging and drama that was designed to outdo the previous activity. The open ceremonies seemed to him like a few hours of watching a live version of ‘Fantasia’. Continue reading

As a regular, practical and protective measure, Kite kept the makers of cell phones well employed because every call that he made was from a new phone. He’d buy them hot on the market and buy them at 10 or 20 at a time, activate them using different plans and then toss them out as soon as he used them. It was tedious, costly and an administrative nightmare, but it insured that no-one would ever be able to trace a second call because he never made one.

After seeing Kite’s – or Carl Parkfield’s – name and picture on anything that was related to Sasha’s death, Eddie wanted to have a little chat with his long lost friend from university. However, after reviewing all of the security documents, and collecting any contact info he could find, none of lead him to Carl. Continue reading

Edward Manchester comes from a long line of Manchesters that have had a hand in influencing the economic and political direction of America and Canada since the early days of both countries. His family has a history of having a hand in all kinds of popular activities, like rum-running to the Chicago area, funding both sides of the army during the US civil war, arming resistance movements in socialist or communist Latin America and printing the one and only newspaper in several Canadian towns, leading to a very controlled and myopic view of certain issues. When Eddie returned to his desk, the file on Sasha had already arrived and was sitting in a closed package, a hermetically sealed history of his once youthful and attentive lover. It struck him that this was all that would remain of an exuberant and flamboyant person who could have done so much with himself had Eddie not ruined his life.

He cut open the seal and pulled out the cream-coloured folder. The only markings on it were a security number and a plain white label that read “Pigeon, Sasha.” Continue reading

August 4, 2008

Eddie Manchester wasn’t a resourceful person, but he was a senior-level employee with one of the world’s largest corporations, so he could at least use his position to dig a little deeper.

Being more emotional than thoughtful, he left Kite sitting in the coffee shop, and returned to his office, his mind trying to process what he had been told. Murder? The OMNINet? It was run by people who claimed that they were ‘good Christians’. They wouldn’t harm anyone, would they?

As soon as he got back to work, he checked his calendar and cancelled any meetings he had. Given his level at the company, his main excuse was that he was double-booked and he blamed his executive assistant with every apologetic call. The occasional derogatory comment came up and for a brief moment, he enjoyed poking fun at a girl that actually worked very hard for him. Continue reading
