“You guys have got to listen to this …” Kite said excitedly as he piled into the small hotel room that was tucked in behind Time Square.

Chaos and Hummus were kicking back, playing HalfLife on their video player, drinking a few beers, bong still smoking slightly.

They were slow to respond only because they were intent on hammering each other with the MP5s and Glock 17s, the weapons of choice in this particular game. They were playing in “versus” mode, which meant that they would attached each other rather than team up to destroy a common enemy.

“Guys … c’mon! I’m on something huge here. Do you want to get paid or not?” Kite asked rhetorically, knowing the question would drive their attention. Continue reading

She’d been beaten. She was wounded emotionally and spiritually. She had no moral compass guiding her through this nightmare. She felt used. She was tired. She was no longer a woman.

Heather decided that it was time and she decided to do it when the kids weren’t around. Continue reading

The Econoline van that the Harken family owns should have been taken off the road years ago. However, this family had made exceptional use of it over the last decade and there were no plans to put it to rest any time soon.

It was a light beige colour, and the rust and holes make it look like a kodachrome negative of a block of old Swiss cheese. The nose of the van was short and the headlight cover on the driver’s side was cracked. Over the last year, enough water had seeped into the small cavity, ending the light’s life prematurely. Of course, it wasn’t an issue because Heather Harken never drove at night. Her constant chores kept her in.

“I have a new project for you that I know you’ll enjoy. However, you will absolutely have to follow my directions to the letter,” said ‘Diana’, who also went by the code name “EphesianQueen”.

At great risk to each other’s identity, they had agreed to meet in person in order to establish a level of trust between themselves. Kite felt – and Diana agreed – that when you were not connected face to face, even in disguise, it was easy to become disloyal to one another. That said, Kite had also hoped that he might be able to get more than a handshake from his new employer, including some clues as to who she might be. He wasn’t the type to resort to blackmail, but if he had to, he would.

“And what, pray tell, were you doing at a meeting like that?” Matthew asked Heather sternfully.

Matthew was an imposing character, of Scottish heritage, ruddy face and ruddier nose, both brought on buy an enormous amount of drinking over the bulk of his 62 years, but also by facing the merciless winds of January as he worked his farm. He weighed about 280 pounds, most of it at his centre, but a good chunk with his arms as well, given the volume of lifting and heaving that he had to do on the farm. He was in surprisingly good shape, particularly given the abuse that he hurled at himself, and he was proud of the fact that he could out-lift a man half his age. Continue reading

A small church in Heresford is where the MOMYS, or Mothers of Many Young Siblings, meet every other week. It’s an old church that was built in the 1920s by optimistic settlers, expecting a herd of parishioners to follow them here as urbanites were pushed out of expensive city areas. Instead, they were to discover that the town would be neglected and depleted of people as they left for more promising work opportunities to the south, east or west shortly after the Depression kicked in. Many of the builders left as well, but some of the sturdiest souls remained, especially those whose parents came here an hundred years before.

The INC Recorder headline was titled “The Univists”, all in simple block letters.

It was a well-crafted promotional document meant to generate a boost in membership. For years, the number of members attending Univist activities – be they Sunday Mass, Saturday BBQs, or teen ‘fun nights’ – were experiencing precipitous declines.

Traditionally, the Univists targeted North American rural families and farmers – people that were alone and separated from society and who needed a support network.

Winter anywhere can be a daunting threat, particularly those who love to do nothing better than sit in the sun and soak up the rays.

Winter in January in the northern hemisphere challenges even the sturdiest of characters. Those who survive it have bragging rights to a much thicker skin than their cousins to the south. Continue reading
